Background
This study of patents and publications in Marine Renewable Energies was conducted by Ouest Valorisation for WEAMEC in June 2016.
Its aim was to provide a quantitative picture of the patent and scientific publications landscape relating to the skills of the universities and organizations targeted by WEAMEC in Europe, in connection with Renewable Marine Energies: offshore wind (floating and floating), tidal energy, wave energy and OTEC. Various skills related to its technologies have made it possible to refine the publications and patents produced.
The targeted institutions are:
- Aalborg University
- Technical University of Danemark (DTU)
- The University of Edinburgh
- FloWave
- EMEC – European Marine Energy Center
- Fraunhofer
- University of Stuttgart
- University of Kiel
- MaREI – Marine Renewable Energy Ireland
- University College Cork (UCC)
- University College Dublin,
- Nerwagian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
- The Norwagian Marine Technology Research Institute (MARINTEK)
- SINTEF,
- WaveEC-Offshore Renewables
The data collected covers the period of 2010-April 2016.
The German ecosystems (Fraunhofer IWES, Universities of Stuttgart, Kiehl, …), Danes (Aalborg, DTU, …) and Norwegians (NTNU, MARINTEK, SINTEF, …) are mainly oriented towards bottom fixed offshore wind energy and began a transition to the floating wind turbine.
The Irish ecosystems (MAREI, Universities of Cork and Dublin, …), Scots (University of Edinburgh, FLOWAVE, EMEC, …) and Portuguese (Wavec) are mainly focused on oceanic energies (wave and tidal energy).
These elements made it possible to reinforce the target ecosystems of WEAMEC’s international strategy.
